Sunday Thoughts

I feel the title is misleading–this post has nothing related whatsoever to Sunday. It just happens to be the day of the week, and for the past few days, I’ve been followed by a thought (more like realization) that I can’t shake. Maybe sharing it here will help it find its home.

Although I don’t discuss it much here on the blog, I read tarot and oracle cards. I find that they help center me when I need a little chill-out time, and often, that there is a message for something I’m dealing with. It’s not mystical or magical, it’s sitting in a space with myself and letting the images and connections guide me to something I’m missing. I use them for general life questions and also to help guide my writing and creative process when I feel stuck.

Last week, I did a reading for a friend and myself, and I haven’t been able to shake the 10 of Wands energy in that reading. Here’s the 10 of Wands in the Gilded Tarot, which was the deck I used for this reading:

A quick overview of the energy of the 10 of Wands is that you’re carrying too many burdens (energetic or physical), dealing with overwhelm, stress, and burnout as a result of taking on too much or taking on things that don’t belong to you. Somehow I feel this could be the official card of adulthood, but I’ll keep that thought to myself.

But in that recent reading, it was more like–yes, you may be taking on too many responsibilities that are not for you, or trying to do too much, but 1) it’s a result of your not knowing yourself better and needing to establish stronger boundaries, and 2) don’t pick up a wand (aka a responsibility) unless you actually feel it serves your highest good in some way. I realized that this man was not standing in the field and the ten wands simply dropped into his arms from heaven above, but that he deliberately chose to wander the field and pick up each wand individually. Picking up one wand by itself is not a big deal, and does not require a lot of energy. But picking up two, three, seven…the burden progressively becomes more difficult to manage and carry. By the time you’ve picked up ten of them, you may not be able to get to where you wanted to go because you have all this extra weight (in the form of thoughts or meaningless obligations) to carry with you.

If any of this resonates, the solution is simple: drop the wands, drop the obligations you don’t want to fulfill. There is never anything wrong with releasing things that don’t serve you. Call someone and politely decline that invitation to come to Thanksgiving when you weren’t really feeling it. Start looking into things that feed your soul and make you feel more yourself rather than giving yourself so freely and openly to others and getting so little (or nothing) in return. Don’t do things that your heart doesn’t feel. (Yes, double negative. I’m required to say that to appease my English teacher soul.)

In other words, honor yourself. I suppose that’s a beautiful enough Sunday thought, so I wasn’t completely misleading with the title. However this Sunday shakes out for you, I hope you spend it in a way that makes you happy.

  1. I love this post, and have been working on doing this for some time now. it’s a long process for me, but I’m getting there

  2. The only way to get there is to practice in every opportunity we’re given. It’s not easy, but our peace is worth it.
